Winter Ecosystems

There are many different winter ecosystems that can make a difference to your survival. Some examples are:

Prairies: where we live here in Saskatchewan, there is very often a high wind chill and not very much shelter or trees for fires. The snow blows into the low lying areas so it is easy to walk around without snowshoes.

Boreal Forest: This is northern Saskatchewan. There is much more shelter and lots of firewood but there is also much more snow so snowshoes are important.

Mountains: (Alberta and British Columbia) There is lots of snow and forests. The weather can change very quickly and there are lots of big storms. Also in the mountains, there is a huge danger of avalanches.

Tundra: (Northern Canada) Once you get past the tree line the land can be very much like the prairies except there are really no trees or wood available. Also there can be huge ravines and cliffs which can be very dangerous.
